Can You Use a Shampoo Base Instead of Soap Base for Shampoo Bars?
Yes, you can use a solid shampoo base instead of a soap base when making a homemade shampoo bar. A solid shampoo base is specially formulated for hair and usually has a balanced pH, which is gentle on the scalp and hair.
Using a shampoo base can help reduce dryness and make the shampoo bar more suitable for frequent use. It is a great option if you have sensitive scalp, dry hair, or chemically treated hair.
However, solid shampoo bases can be slightly more expensive and may not be as easily available as soap bases.
If you are a beginner or looking for a budget-friendly option, a good-quality soap base can still work well for making homemade shampoo bar along with oils and butters.
Both options are effective — the best choice depends on your hair type, budget, and ingredient availability.

Where do you get the rice starch powder?
Hello Linda
I got it from a local shop they basically sale flours and starch powders. You can try it online or if you still can’t get it. Then you can use rice powder which is also known as rice flour.
Thank you.
Can the rice starch grow spores / bacillus cereus? And are you testing the ph of the bars since they are from a regular soap base or are you using a shampoo melt and pour base?
Rice starch is in the powder form which is free from moisture so there is no chance of any spores or mold growth. Bacterial growth occurs when there is moisture, heat and no space left for the air to pass. If you keep the shampoo bar in a soap case that has holes to let the bar dry easily, then there will be no bacterial growth.
Yes, I used the regular soap base and They already mentioned the pH value of the soap base and I added oils and butters that also help to neutralize it. So, I did not felt the need to test the pH again. Goat milk soap base is already creamy and rich but if you don’t want to use it then You can definitely use shampoo melt and pour base instead.
Did you use a shampoo bar melt and pour base or a regular soap bar melt and pour base? The ph of bar soap is too high for the scalp – or do all the oils neutralize it?
Hello Jessica
I used a regular goat milk soap base that has the pH value 6.5-7.5, The natural pH value of the scalp is around 5.5 and yes oils and butters do help to moisturize your scalp and prevents scalp dryness. If you want to make this shampoo bar using a shampoo base then you can surely give it a try.
Is this recipe without lye?
Hello Rebecca
No soap bar is without lye actually there can be no soap without lye. I used the soap base which already has lye, oils and goat milk, which is totally safe to use. To make this recipe simple I used the base so that there is no need to handle the lye.
